Because the COVID-19 public health emergency ended May 11, 2023 , millions of people could lose coverage . In the next few months, 15 million people  may lose their healthcare coverage as Medicaid requires eligibility verification. Find out how to prepare for Medicaid renewal and discover other coverage options if you don’t qualify.

What is Medicaid Redetermination?

Medicaid redetermination, also called Medicaid renewal, is how your state verifies if you still qualify  for Medicaid. During COVID-19 public health emergency, renewals were put on hold to ensure access to healthcare. After May 11, 2023, states have returned to the normal process of checking Medicaid eligibility. In the coming months, you may need to go through your state’s Medicaid renewal process.

Get Ready for Medicaid Renewal

The state may send you a Medicaid renewal letter , so there’s a few things you can do to prepare:

\
Ensure the state has your current mailing address, phone number, and email
\
Check your mail and email
\
Fill out and return your renewal form

If you don’t qualify for Medicaid, you may have other health coverage options.

Other Coverage Options

Losing Medicaid can qualify you for a special enrollment period. Your other coverage options may include:

\
Employer health plans
\
Medicare

A health plan through ACA Marketplace could cost as little as $10 per month . Furthermore, these health insurance plans can cover prescription drugs, doctor visits, urgent care, hospital visits, and more. Shop Marketplace plans .

Medicare usually covers people aged 65 and older. However, it also covers people younger than 65 who have a permanent disability. For example, end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
