Which Medigap Plan Is Best for Me?
Your choice of Medigap plan can depend on many different factors, like what it covers or how much it costs. Medigap plans N and G are both valuable plans, but they differ in a few major areas, like:
Premiums and benefits
Annual Medigap costs
Copays
Let’s talk about the pros and cons of both plans — Medicare Plan N vs. Plan G — to help you decide which is the best Medigap plan for your health care needs.
What’s the Difference Between Medigap Plan N & Plan G?
Medigap Plan N is a low-cost alternative to Medigap Plan G. In other words, the monthly premium cost for Medigap Plan N is typically lower than Medigap Plan G.
The benefit differences of Medicare Plan N vs. Plan G include:
Medicare Part B Excess Charges: When providers do not accept Medicare assignments, they can charge you up to 15% more than the Medicare-approved price.
Medigap Plan N Copayment Costs: Plan N may require you to pay up to a $20 copay for office visits, and you could pay up to a $50 copay for emergency room visits.
What Does A Medigap Plan Cost?
How much a Medigap plan costs you will depend on how often you visit your doctor. If you visit your doctor more often, Plan G could cost you less Plan N per year. For example, if you visit your doctor every month, you could pay up to $240 in copays with Medigap Plan N.
The more often you see your doctor, the more you can save on copays with Medigap Plan G
How Can I Avoid Plan N Copays?
You have two options to avoid Medigap Plan N copayments for outpatient doctor or hospital visits:
Buy Medigap Plan G.
Visit an Urgent Care facility. Because Urgent Care facilities aren’t coded as either an office visit or an ER visit, they have a unique code. So Medigap Plan N copays don’t apply to visits to an Urgent Care facility.
