You become eligible for Medicare when diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or after receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits for 24 months.
If you have ESRD and you are on dialysis , Medicare coverage usually starts on the first day of the fourth month of your dialysis treatments. For example, if you start dialysis on Aug. 1, your coverage will begin on Nov. 1.
People with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) — commonly called Lou Gehrig’s disease — can get Medicare as soon as they are diagnosed with ALS and approved for SSDI benefits.
